Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to contest particular decisions made by the official, echoing the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
